Winter Quarter Bible Classes:
(beginning December 4, 2011)
GENERATION NOW (18-40)
Led by Matt Jackson (Campus Minister) and meets in Room 151.
Generation Now is a NEW class designed for young singles, college students, and young couples and families.
"The Prophets of Israel"
Class description: God called Israel out of Egypt and envisioned for them a society radically different from the dominant ideology of their surrounding world. The heart of the Torah teachings embodied the practical applications of how God’s people could love God and love others to a radical depth. However, as the fledgling nation turned into an empire, Israel began to resemble Egypt, it’s former oppressor, and not a community responding to God’s new vision. God responded by sending prophets to his people to call them back to His heart and avoid a judgment upon a complacent and conforming people. This class will explore some of the prophets sent to Israel prior to its exile and challenge the church to strive to be a community called by God and resist conformity to the surrounding culture.
MID-LIFERS (34-55) / GENERATIONS (all ages)
Led by James Smith and meets in Room 189.
“God and the Problem of Evil & Suffering”
Class description: Natural disasters and the prevalence of evil and suffering in the world often challenge Christians to give an account for our witness to a benevolent and loving God. Is it possible to speak of God and witness to His goodness when all around us there are clear markers of suffering and a creation that groans? This class will explore answers to that question and many others through an investigation of sin, evil, temptation, suffering, and justice. It is vital for Christians today to think through these issues—consider this your invitation!
PRIMETIMERS (50+)
Led by Greg Vaughan and meets in Room 186.
“Perspectives on Science and Christian Thought”
Class description: There are a variety of issues that arise in the discussion of science and Christian theology (e.g. the scientific status of creationism, the creation/evolution debate, proper interpretation of Genesis, etc.) and often there has been a tension in the dialogue between science and religion. Is a more charitable conversation possible? Recent developments in Christian scholarship suggest that a more charitable dialogue is possible. This class will investigate selected topics in the interaction between science and Christian theology.
SINGLES (all ages)
Led by Bill Haun and meets in Room 188.
“Proverbs”
Class description: The book of Proverbs is a very important part of the wisdom literature of Israel. Next to the Psalms, this book is turned to more often than many others in the Hebrew Bible because of its richness as a devotional resource. Addressed to the simple and the young, as well as the wise, Proverbs teaches discernment and ethical responsibility through its collection of proverbial sayings, wisdom poetry, commands, and admonitions. Proverbs invites the reader to intellectual discipline as a life-giving synthesis of keen observation and reflection, ethical concern, and piety.
WOMEN (all ages) Various Topics
Led by various teachers and meets in Room 170.
